2016 Design Trends Anyone Can Do
written by Gail Adkins
There’s nothing new under the sun – or is there?
Every year there are multiple lists of the hot new trends in design. This year is no exception and I’ve picked out three trends that I think have some lasting power when you do them your way. Let’s dive right in!
Yes, that’s right. Florals are making a comeback. If you like the look for your home there are several ways to make it work.
If money is no object – go for the gusto and bring in a large upholstered piece. This absolutely makes a statement and is probably best for the most adventurous design style. Many of us will find this a bit much tho – especially because it can be a challenge to make it work with the other pieces we love.
If something less costly, and more subtle is more your style, then lovely floral pillows add an updated touch or in the right space, wall decals may work to make a statement and highlight a quiet corner.
Formal Dining Room
Yes, they tell me this is coming back. For many of us, it just isn’t part of our lifestyle anymore. If you have one now or want to create one then the good news is that there are great pieces that are intended to be multi-functional.
You can use bench seating that can be moved to accommodate other spaces when you entertain.
Upholstered chairs do double duty as well. Storage pieces aren’t just for china and crystal either. Use the space to store linens, display artwork or hide office accessories when the space functions as a meeting area.
Statement Bathroom Mirrors
This is something all of us can easily do. If you have a plain mirror you can frame it to add personality. Don’t be afraid to use color here especially if cabinets and fixtures are mostly white. If it’s in a guest bath where functionality is less of a concern, find a mirror that shows off your artistic flair.
Mirrors can easily be cut to any shape so you are only limited by your imagination!
